Book Trailer
This week in the workshops we looked at developing skills in After Effects.
I started by choosing a book: Delirium by Lauren Oliver
The Blurb:
My Process:
I started by brainstorming ideas for my book trailer. I then began creating drafts on Photoshop.
Next, I went to the Free Music Archive and found three tracks which I have mixed together. I then opened After Effects and started dragging and editing each of the music tracks, this involved cutting and duplicating one of the files as I only wanted 1 second of the whole clip. I also used effects such as fades altering the volume of the clips.
I then went back to Photoshop and made each frame individually through shapes, text and filters. I saved each frame as a jpeg file and dragged them onto the composition. I also added effects to some of the frames such as fades.
After learning some editing effects in my next workshop I decided to go back and reattempt this brief with a different book. I chose 'The Martian' by Andy Weir.
The Blurb:
I’m stranded on Mars.
I have no way to communicate with Earth.
I’m in a Habitat designed to last 31 days.
If the Oxygenator breaks down, I’ll suffocate. If the Water Reclaimer breaks down, I’ll die of thirst. If the Hab breaches, I’ll just kind of explode. If none of those things happen, I’ll eventually run out of food and starve to death.
So yeah. I’m screwed.

The almost childlike, simplistic cartoons that I use for this animation is intentional as I wanted to convey Mark Watney's, the main character's, immature humor which is a key theme throughout the book. In contrast I have used other visual cues to hopefully convey that this is in fact a book aimed at young adults through my choice to use an actual nasa rocket instead of a more childlike triangular one with portholes.
I really liked the text effect that I had used in my original trailer so I decided to incorporate a similar thing in my new trailer and develop it further experimenting with other effects such as 'text decoder' animations. This time the static is used to hint at the lost communication between earth and Mark Watney.
I felt that it was important to communicate to the audience that the book is about a man being left behind on mars. Therefore, I decided to recreate one of the early scenes from the book where Watney's team use the only rocket to evacuate without him.

I started by choosing a book: Delirium by Lauren Oliver
The Blurb:
There was a time when love was the most important thing in the world. People would go to the end of the earth to find it. They would tell lies for it. Even kill for it.
But now love has been declared a dangerous disease.

The Key concept that I wanted to get across was that love was a dangerous thing. One element from the book that I decided was important to include was the rebellion group this inspired my decion to include a static effect, making it appear that the message has been hijacked.
Here is the finished product, scroll down further to see my process.
